Sofas : At Least A Thousand Options!

By Mark Walters

The sofa is an essential piece of furniture that nearly every modern house around the world contains. Ask yourself - when was the last time that you visited a housed that didn't have a sofa? Maybe you can't even remember!

It started off as a quite simple item, that was basically just a wooden framework covered in leather. That was way back in the Renaissance period. You'll struggle to find one like that these days though. Nowadays they are much more comfortable and luxurious. Padding and spring cushions are included almost without exception, and there are a whole host of textiles that they can be upholstered with.

Yes, the sofa has evolved greatly, so much so that there are now sub-categories of them. There is the British loveseat, which is meant for two people. There is the settee, which is meant for three or more people. There is the divan, which is a sofa that has only a partial back rest, or even none at all.

There is the chaise lounge, which one arm rested sofa that is longer than normal. There is the canape, which is a three seater than ranks looks over comfort. There is the ottoman, which is often mistakenly not called a sofa at all due to its lack of a back rest and arm rests.

A fairly modern twist on the traditional sofa is sectional sofas. Sectional sofas consist of two or three sections that come together to form a complete sofa.

It can seem like the possible combinations available are endless. You could buy a plush sofa with leather upholstery and spring cushions, a simple sofa made of foam and upholstered with linen, or anything in between. Prices can get expensive at the top end but even on a tight budget you will still have thousands of options available to you.

Ultimately though, despite all of the unique characteristics that you can find in sofas, the number one consideration for most people is comfort when sitting on it. No-one could really be pleased with a sofa that was anything but comfortable! - 29957
