Medicine Cabinets-Get The Most in Function and Style

By Myra Neuford

Consider how necessary your medicine cabinet is to your daily grooming routine.

If you have never given this much thought just resolve for one day not to open your medicine cabinet, and cover the mirror. Before the day is done I am sure you will recognize just how much value your medicine cabinet provides.

When you decide it is time to replace and shop for a new medicine cabinet it is good to review your needs and what is available.

Space will be a major consideration. Not only should you consider the space available above your vanity, but consider what type of lighting you will install, and faucet height. This can factor into both the size and the placement of your new medicine cabinet.

Deciding whether you will select a wall mounted medicine cabinet or one that is recessed is also an important choice. A recessed model will protrude less and is more sleek and attractive, but will require more thought and work to install. Be sure you know where your wiring is if you are installing a recessed medicine cabinet and take safety precautions.

Hanging a new wall mounted medicine cabinet is very easy, unless you are hanging it where a larger recessed version was taken out. Here again, some repair to the wall is necessary first. Also realize that a wall mounted cabinet will protrude more.

There are many styles to choose from and you will want your new medicine cabinet to coordinate with the other decor elements of your bathroom. Early American, Contemporary, Mission, Art Deco, and Country are a few possible style choices.

Whether you select a framed or a frameless mirror is a personal choice. Wood tones are timeless and always popular. Oak, walnut and cherry are a few options. Painted frames are also available, black and white being the two most often chosen.

Frameless medicine cabinets are a very popular choice. They give a bathroom a sleek look and extend the mirrored area.

Also consider whether you want sliding doors on your medicine cabinet, or doors that swing open. It goes without saying, that the inside shelves should be adjustable.

Some medicine cabinets are offered with extra depth to store items as large as blow dryers out of sight. Other models offer built in electrical plugins which can be handy. Lighting embedded in the mirror itself, fogless mirrors, and some high end models even offer temperature controlled storage for medicines and cosmetics to extend shelf life.

Good hinges should be an important feature in your mirrored medicine cabinet. Mirrors are heavy and piano or scissor hinges are needed to manage the load.

If your bathroom is small, and you have a corner sink, there are also medicine cabinets in corner versions to meet this need. - 29957
