Update Your Kitchen Cabinets - Don't Replace Them

By Joe McLain

Regardless of what you might think as you roam around your kitchen, the cabinet doors are actually an important accessory. But as with most things in life, the styles don't last forever; neither does stain or paint. So when you finally realize that you're out of style and need an update, you probably wont have the money to purchase new cabinets. But there are definitely a few ways to update your kitchen cabinet doors without spending a lot of money.

The first and easiest method you should consider is to replace your current cabinet door handles or knobs. They are one of the things that can easily make your cabinets look old or outdated. If you replace them once in a while, you'll be able to update your whole kitchen by spending very little money. And new hardware is always nice too, right?

As you're in the process of replacing the handles or knobs on your cabinet doors, be sure and stop by the local flea markets and bargain stores before you head down to the big retailers. If you buy someone else's old handles, you'll easily save a few bucks, and then you can just clean them up to look as good as new. There's probably nothing wrong with them; the owner probably just no longer liked them. But that doesn't mean they wont look great in your kitchen!

You also might want to think about repainting or re-staining your current cabinet doors. All you have to do is sand off the old paint or stain and get some new stuff on there. And be sure to remember that you also need to re-do the visible parts of the cabinets themselves so that they match the doors. Of course this method of updating your kitchen cabinets requires more time and work, but the results will be well worth it!

If you just don't feel like re-doing them with new paint or stain, you could also easily replace the doors of the cabinets. You should be able to find a variety of doors that would go well with your existing cabinets, which you can replace with a newer, updated look. The overall look of your cabinets is primarily based on the doors themselves, not the entire cabinet, replacing just the doors is an excellent way to clean up and update your kitchen without spending a good deal of money.

Updating an older kitchen can be much more expensive than any other room in your home, so don't waste the money buying completely new cabinets when you can just as easily update them with a bit of time and effort on your part. You could even consider hiring a professional to build you just new doors for half the price or less than purchasing all new full cabinets. Besides, there's probably nothing wrong with your current cabinets themselves, is there? So why replace whats not broken? Create a whole new kitchen for a whole lot less just by updating your current kitchen cabinet doors. - 29957
