How to Find Bedbugs in the Mattress

By Renee Garcia

If you suspect a bedbug infestation, do you know where you will most likely find them? As their name implies, bedbugs can be found in the sofa, couch, or mattress " the usual places where you lie down.

What are the signs of a bedbug infestation? The first sign is the bedbug bite. If bedbugs bit you, you will see bite marks upon waking up.

If your bite marks are raised or flat welts that are pinkish to red, you may suspect these to be caused by bedbugs. Also, it is very typical of bedbug bites to form a linear pattern. You may see 3 bites in a row. Whenever the host moves, the bedbug is disrupted and changes its feeding position. Bedbugs eat the blood of warm-blooded animals which include humans.

Bedbug bites cannot cause any disease. But the bites can cause discomfort from burning and itching. To relieve itching and burning, topical corticosteroids are prescribed. These can also make the bite marks disappear fast.

If the bite marks are itchy, stop yourself from scratching because this will cause scarring. Antihistamines and systemic corticosteroids are also used to treat the burning sensation and itchiness. But these medicines are not helpful in making the bite marks disappear faster.

Now that you are sure that the bite marks are from bedbugs, the next step is to find the area of infestation. Start inspecting the mattress. Look for cracks or holes and spots that are red or brown. The brown spots are the fecal matter of bedbugs. And the red spots are the blood from crushed bedbugs.

The mattress is the usual place that bedbugs live. If the mattress has bedbugs check anything that is close to it like the bed frame, walls, floors, and others. If it is just your mattress that has the bedbugs, you can buy bedbug insecticides to spray or dust onto your mattress.

After spraying insecticides, you can also put your mattress inside a mattress cover. This will ensure that all bedbugs will be killed and no transfer will be possible. The mattress cover will stop the bedbugs from biting you. Therefore, the bedbugs will starve to death in 6 months. - 29957
