Ready-made Curtains - Going Over The Drawbacks

By Sarah K Howarth

In the course of designing the interior of a room, the selection of curtains is one of the prime items on the agenda. Their selection is very crucial in making or breaking the overall impression of the interior design of the room.

Curtains come in two basic types: ready made curtains and made to order curtains. While the made to order curtains are the oldest and most popular type of curtains, ready made curtains have carved out a niche for themselves. Made to order curtains are prepared after taking exact measurements of the windows, doors or other places where these curtains have to be placed.

Like many other household items, curtains are also easily available in the market. Nevertheless, it is up to the interior designer that whether he/she is interested in buying ready-made curtains or actually ordering them. It could be a tough choice for some people as both categories have appealing aspects to their selection. Nonetheless, one could not ignore the fact that both the categories (ready-made and made to order curtains) have their share of disadvantages as well.

Ready-made curtains on the other hand come in a prepared fashion and one cannot go for any alterations or changes, except for minor ones like shortening the length of the curtain. Ready-made curtains also do not have any great variety available in the choice of fabrics, colours and textures. One can surely buy a curtain that best suits the interior decoration, but there always remains a flaw or void in the interior design.

Another factor that lowers the image of ready-made curtains is their quality. Most of the ready-made curtains are prepared in factories where no particular attention is given to details, because they are made on a particular pattern. Subsequently, many curtains have sewing flaws or they cannot be hanged well due to fabric defects, among other things. Sometimes, ready made curtains come with such cheap quality that they can be easily torn away even with a minor pulling. However, these types of curtains are those that are the cheapest.

If the quality of fabric and stitching is satisfactory, there is a problem with the design or the variety. If the design and variety are successfully dealt with, then arises the issue of size and shape. To cut a long story short, the problems are there to stay, which makes it a nuisance for the interior designer.

This is the biggest problem of ready-made curtains that you cannot place them on any type and shape of windows easily. If you try to do some alterations through cutting and then sewing the unwanted parts of the curtain, the whole shape becomes disfigured and the curtain becomes unfit for use.

Another factor that diminishes the prospects of ready-made curtains is their prices. Although they are relatively cheaper than made to order curtains, the quality remains inferior and the expensive ready-made curtains are costlier than what a made to order curtain. The best possible solution is to avoid buying ready-made curtains, as they can make a dent in your wallet, especially if you are not satisfied with the results. - 29957
