Southwestern Design for Your Living Room

By Paul Anthony

When we think of the Southwest most of us think of desert, cactus and wide open space. When we decorate for Southwestern flavor, it is the colors of the Southwest that become important. The colors of nature abound in the Southwest. Blending into nature's palette are the colors and design associated with the Native Americans indigenous to this area.

Make sure before all is purchased for the decor that you are aware of what color scheme to go with. Many choose a neutral wall if they aren't into painting their walls bright colors. If you do this you'll need to accent with the popular southwest colors such as oranges, reds, yellows, and greens. Adding this color palette to your living room design will make it feel as if it came right from a designer.

If you are sort of scared of color and want to stay more neutral with just a hint of color then go ahead and paint your walls an off white or at least a light tan. Bring the color scheme in with the pillows on the furniture, window treatments, and even picture frames. Mix a few neutral pillows in with the mix and you'll create a great scheme of color.

If your walls are painted in bright colors, your couch and chairs should be of more subdued, perhaps even neutral tones to break up the cacophony of color. In this situation wood is a very good choice to complement the bright colors; dark woods are especially good for setting a Southwest scene. For accent pieces, ivory and turquoise is perfect with bright colors.

Of course you can't forget about the wall decor. Many use Native American rugs as wall art since they don't want them ruined on the floor. If you find other carved wood pieces, this is great to place around the wall or even on a shelf in the room.

Whether you choose the room rugs first and design the room around the rug, or design the room and choose rugs to complete the aura of the room, look for Southwestern rugs handmade by Native Americans. You will be able to find all sizes of rugs from small to large. Native American rugs are works of art; they may tell a story or depict history or maybe they will include Kokopelli, horses, buffalo and other images of importance in their lives. Your Southwestern decor will simply not be complete without a Native American handmade woolen rug.

Always remember the southwest style is supposed to feel laid back and you need to enjoy yourself after your hard work is complete. - 29957
