My Raves About Rag Rugs: Their Usefulness At Home

By Julio Juarez

Not all area rugs are intricate, expensive and high-maintenance. There are ones called rag rugs that are the exact opposites - they are simple and easy to use, affordable and low-maintenance. I'm sure you've seen or maybe owned these floor pieces from woven rugs of different colors. They are very practical and decorative items as well.

Rag rugs in the kitchen

One place that you want to put rag rugs in your kitchen is in the area before the sink. If you stand at the sink for any period of time, you will want to have something soft under your feet instead of a hard, tile floor. Rag rugs are also easy to wash and will wear well. You can usually pick up these inexpensive rugs at discount stores as well as online stores for a few dollars and they are well worth the expense.

Rag rugs in formal rooms

Our pets don't have hands for eating and drinking, so they will inevitably spill some of their food and drinks no matter how classy their table manners are. I love the functionality of a rag rug as cushion or base for my dog's dish. The rag keeps the floor clean, especially that my dog eats in the kitchen, and it makes cleaning up after less of a hassle.

Under the Table and Chairs

Using an area rug for the dining table and chairs is a good way to spice up the dining room. Same goes for placing an area rug under the sofa set. Rag rugs for this purpose should be bigger to accommodate all the furniture. Take measurements of the area before buying a piece to make sure you get a rug with the correct size. It should fit well with the set.

Door Check

The front door, patio door, bathroom door and in my case, my bedroom door, are areas where you can also put a rag rug. Setting anal-compulsiveness aside, rugs positioned in these areas can safeguard your house from too much dirt. You can wipe your feet or shoes clean before entering the house, particularly if there's rain. Hence, you can avoid having wet, stained floors. From the backyard or the patio, a rag rug in the entrance to the house will also prevent soil or mud from getting indoors. My dog has been trained to pause on the rag rug before entering and wait for someone to wipe her paws. This started during the rainy season when her wet and soiled paws would grace my floor and I was always cleaning up after her. She knows now that without this prerequisite, she is to stay put in her own house in the backyard, without complaining. Period. Coming out of the bathroom, especially after a bath can mark wet footprints on the floor. A rag rug by the bathroom door is good deterrence for slipping accidents.

These are just some of the uses of rag rugs at home. I've implemented all these and I only have positive results thus far. I like that the rugs enhance my living spaces while still maintaining their usefulness around the house. - 29957
