Understanding How An Electronic Air Cleaner Can Change Your Life

By Henry Jacobs

In a world full of uncleanness, it is not surprising the number of individuals who suffer with an allergy is on the increase. It's manifestations may be in the form of bouts of sneezing, puffy appearance of the eyes which are watering and a running or a blocked nose which makes it tough to breathe. Most allergies see to affect their victims during the spring time when pollen is more likely. It could also depend on the place of your residence as some areas are prone to carry such contaminants than other areas.Allergy relief purifiers are a relatively new discovery, designed to help sufferers but are they any good?

You don't have to be outside for hypersensitivity to hit you so an electronic air cleaner or air purifier can be of use in the home and it's a known fact that you will experience more contaminants in your home than anywhere else.We are continuously breathing an air of the same sort repetitively from our homes that can be more of like considered as enclosed spaces.Attacks that can set off very quickly may be caused by some of the common things found at home such as the dust and dust mites. The filtering of the air that you breathe and the removal of unwanted particles which can be the cause of attacks are just what an allergy relief electronic air cleaner can do.

Allergy relief electronic air cleaner or air purifiers can be conveniently used in any room and because most of them are portable, it can be lugged around any where in the house to put it on, simply plug it in.Some units of these units can get rid of other odors that can trigger attacks such as those coming from the perfume or air fresheners aside from dust and dust mites. These units also catch the smoke or even smoke odors which often set off an attack and you do not have to inhale that stench anymore. An allergy attack can't be avoided especially if you are near a person who smokes as the smell is still within that person lingering through his or her hair, hands and clothes which can be enough to trigger an attack. The electronic air cleaner or air purifier catches the smoke or smoke smell and traps it then carries it through the filtering system to initiate processing the production of a cleaner air to breathe in.

Air purifiers are easily and readily available in a range of outlets including home improvement stores or stores which stock clothes, groceries and home improvement goods.Several types of units are available in the market with many made specifically for domestic use. They can be used in a room or throughout the house and there are even systems for your car or truck with units that you can wear around your neck like a necklace that will filter the air where ever you go.I never even thought that a built in allergy relief electronic air cleaner into your cat box can actually remove feline stink - not until I had one.

Do your research and get the facts about clean air technology and you will be all the better healthier. - 29957

Ways to Help Children Distinguish Between Right and Wrong

By Dr. Noel Swanson

A common situation that many parents face is dealing with their children's behaviors. For example, let's say you had a five year old child that has just entered school. She was a polite, considerate, and helpful young lady at home and in front of her teachers. However, her behavior has recently changed at home and it involves talking back, swearing, and discussing sex in general terms. She learned these behaviors from other kids at school.

How do I help her to make the right choices about good vs. naughty (one of her friends got her to play hookie ....at 5 years old?!); of what is acceptable and not, when she is away from me and faced with those choices without me being there to guide ?"

Hmmm, how indeed? Let's look at the underlying principles.

Kids, like you and me, are doing their best to succeed in life. So their behaviors are their attempts to get good results for themselves, as they themselves would define them. Those "good results" might be to satisfy basic urges such as hunger and warmth, they might be to get approval and love - from their parents, or from their friends, or they might be simply to have fun and excitement.

They will demonstrate the behavior they believe will get them the need they have at that time.

They will discover that their behaviors don't always end in success. They learn from this and try other behaviors until they find the ones that yield the intended result. When deciding what behavior to have we rely on experience, direction for our parents, and our skills and abilities. We create a group of behaviors that we hope will serve our needs effectively.

After experimenting we will find the behaviors that meet our needs. We will use these behaviors to get what we want. The more we achieve a good result with a behavior, the more we demonstrate that behavior.

Returning to your 5 year old daughter. This behavior is a sign that she is in the process of experimenting. She is in a new situation at school and this has expanded her world. She is not sure how to react and is excited and nervous at the same time. She is testing different behaviors to determine which behaviors will end in an intended result.

Your daughter will probably try a host of behaviors. Many of which will not occur ever again as they didn't work. Some behaviors will become a part of her usual behavior. Which behaviors will your daughter keep? It is contingent upon the results of each experience. She is at an age where having your approval and love is very critical to her. She needs to see your reaction to her behaviors. Outside reactions from others also play a role. For example, punishments and rewards can be a big influence on her behavior. She will seek the approval of you, her teachers, and her friends.

You have a significant affect on her as her parent. She young so she will listen to you. When she is a teenager things will change. Your influence can show in two ways.

1. Your emotional reaction to her behaviors. Do you approve or disapprove of her behaviors?

2. Your control of external factors. You can decide what school she goes to, and the types of people she will meet at school and in your neighborhood. You can also impose rewards, punishments, and constraints (such as permissions to do or not do activities).

Weaving what he discussed together and looking at this strategically, you need to answer the following questions:

Does this look like it is just an experimental phase that will almost certainly pass? If so, then don't get too stressed about it all - enjoy the phase of watching your kids growing up and exploring the world. (Hey, I remember sneaking out from home at about 7 to go and play in the school playground, in the dark, at about 9pm. I even put pillows in my bed to deceive my parents. And I turned out okay ... I think...)

Another item to consider is the intensity of reaction you demonstrate to bad behavior. Take swearing for example. If you become exasperated every time she swears, she may view swearing as an adventure because she wants to see you get red with anger.

If you think that her bad behavior is escalating too much then you need to do something to thwart it.

How do you know which it is? That calls for judgment. Look at your own parenting first - are you dong the very best you can? Are you providing good role models? Yours will be the greatest influence in her life.

Check out the school and your neighborhood. How have the children who were raised in this neighborhood do when they grew up? Do they become productive adults or do most of the kids spend their days being in trouble for most of their teenage years?

Spend time talking with parents and teachers at your school. Each school has a culture and perhaps your daughter is trying to fit into this culture. How concerned are the teachers? Does the behavior of most kids at the school improve as they get older?

Unfortunately, you can't watch over every influence in your child's life. You also can't be 100% sure that your daughter will learn right from wrong. However, you can improve the odds of this. Your influence as a parent is great and you should be a positive role model for your child. - 29957

Some Of The Benefits Of Garden Walling

By Matthew Kerridge

Garden walling and the benefits are easily seen with the naked eye. They bring an air of majesty to a garden. They can also provide a certain amount of protection for what you have growing in your garden. It keeps people from walking directly into the garden, and many animals will simply go around if confronted by a wall.

Yes, they really do beautify the area and instill a sort of old world mystique about the place. But it's not as easy as just throwing up some rocks and forming a wall. A good garden wall take some planning and knowledge. Many have their walls done professionally. This is good, especially if they intend on using brick. A brick wall is not an easy thing to build without prior experience.

Many choose to have them built professionally. And it's because of the skills that are necessary to do a good job. It takes years to get good at building walls of brick, and if you try it on your own without any experience, you could end up costing yourself time and money in the long run. They're a lot more technical in nature than one would think at first.

Garden walling will take some initial decisions before getting started. You need to decide on what your wall will be made from, whether it's brick, stone, wood, metal, or a combination of any of these. Color, shape, and height and width are other considerations that you need to nail down long before you begin to build it.

I've seen many different types of garden walls, and some are rough edged and uneven, but still look very good. Others are nearly perfect in their matching up of bricks or blocks. For the most part, neatness and a scheme of regularity throughout the wall is what matters most. You can have one that's consistently uneven, if you maintain that theme throughout the whole wall.

Garden walling can be one of the most favorite improvements you make to your home landscape. And as far as the garden ground goes, it gives the ground a way to level itself. It can push up against the wall when softened by the rain, and form a more level area of ground. The wall will help to hold it level once it begins to settle.

The variation and endless options that a wall brings is part of the attraction to them. They can be rustic, they can be modern, almost any type of style that you can imagine. They can be a combination of stone, brick, metal railing, wood, and all sorts of material depending on your idea of what your wall should be.

Some of the benefits of garden walling are that they not only improve the looks, but the overall function of your garden. By keeping a more level ground, the water gets distributed more evenly, as well as the food for your garden plants, whether it's a vegetable garden or just a walking garden. These walls really add to the artistry of a good landscaping job, and are assets to your home. - 29957

How To Enhance Roller Shades

By Jesita Jerik

Roller shades are different from standard windows. They are best used when a homeowner wants to decorate his or her room. It is easy to modify a room with style, texture and color when you are using window shades. Less money is used for interior design when shades are part of the room. Search for a supplier of shades in your location.

You will also find various grades of steel, ranging from mild to stainless, so you must choose carefully. If you want cheap window shades, then you must go for wood. Shades can be made according to the customer's specification. Custom-made window shades often are more expensive than standard shades.

You can add color, personal design and other options. You must also consider extra services that come with the purchase of window shades. A supplier that provides free installation is preferred. Some shades are easy to install, so you do not need the services of the supplier. The most common types of shades are the suntier, suntone and laminated shades

Roller shades are easy to make and install. However, most people do not know how to make them look great. This task often requires an interior designer. If you cannot afford an interior designer, there is a simple way of decorating your window shades. One way of improving the look of your shades is painting. You do not just splash paint on your shades, but you must follow specific instructions. First, you need tools to carry out this task. There are seven tools required for completing the task. You will need containers of acrylic paint, stamps, stencils, sponge brushes, sea sponge, artist brushes, and a window shades pull. The roller shades pull is a decorative item.

Go to the suppliers and buy roller shades of the right dimensions.

Once you have purchased window shades from your supplier, you need to prepare the surface for painting. Find a long table to rest the shades. You can use multiple platforms made of old doors to make the table. The shades can be laid on the floor if the table is small.

Now that you have a platform for resting your shades, you must start creating a theme for your window shades. Browse art books to look for the best theme. The theme must fit in with your room. Painting styles are also available from paint shops. The sky theme is one of the simplest to make if you are not an artist.

Clean the background and make sure that it is free from dust. Begin painting the sky theme from the top of the shades. A midnight blue color is suitable. Paint in midnight blue until you are halfway from the bottom. When you are halfway, start painting in white color. Make sure that the transition fades from blue to white. The bottom part should be light blue, since your paintbrush is tinged with blue and white paint. Allow the surface to dry.

Next, you must draw the sun using yellow acrylic paint. The sun can be drawn in one corner of the window shades using a flat circular object. Apply paint around the circular object to form a perfect circle. A drum lid can be used to draw the sun. Once you are done with the sun, progress to the moon. The crescent shaped moon must be drawn at the top of the shades.

The last step is to put the finishing touches. The last object in the sky theme is cloud. Clouds can be drawn using a sponge. Dip the sponge in white paint and start drawing the clouds. Clouds are easy to draw. I bet you know the shape of clouds. You can look up your picture book to see how clouds look like on paper. Finally, you must draw stars using your artist brushes. Put the stars at the top of the window shades.

The job is finished. When the painting has dried, install the window. The sky theme is fascinating. The night sky will show during the night, and the day sky will show during the day. There are many types of themes. You are not restricted. Find your style. - 29957

How To Make Your Aquarium Fancy

By Wendy Lucie

Making up an aquarium at home used to be so simple; any hopeful aquarist who could put together a reasonable arrangement of aquatic plants, a few funny pebbles and a little plastic castle in a glass box could end up looking like a sensitive guy for his trouble. If you have ever seen the ethereal and exquisite effects of Japanese aquarium decor though, you know how real the artistry involved in aquascaping is. The organic and harmonious look achieved in Japanese aquarium decor principles often makes people imagine that these are actual attempts at re-creating a biotope, the habitat of an actual ecological community. As tempting as it is to imagine that, these are as man-made as anything you would see in any modern aquarium, and sometimes they are inspired by landscapes you would see above water to boot.

There is something about a living environment: the harder you try to artificially replicate it in your own aquarium, the more elusive it becomes. But if you are lucky and if you try, you may end up with aquarium decor that you find more beautiful than the original. The Japanese aquarium styles sees the fish and the environment they live in as equally contributors to the final effect, after the philosophy that the frame can sometimes be considered to be as important as the painting itself.

The first step to designing your Japanese aquarium would be to pick the general shape of the landscape you want within the tank; popular landscape shapes include arranging for a generally concave look, where the surface rises all around a central valley, and a convex look where the landscape rises from the peripheries of the aquarium to a central prominence. The ideal aquarium decor layout would place before the viewer no more than one or two areas of focus, of something good and catchy to look at. There shouldn't be lot of stuff thrown in there, each piece competing for attention.

Japanese aquarium decor philosophy places some value in imbuing tank designs with a sense of depth. The most popular way to do this is to use lowrise aquarium plants and not bushy ones. The larger shapes in the aquarium need to be the rocks and the driftwood you bring in, and not the plants. Riccia and hairgrass are great choices; for a neat look with excellent depth, try using contrast - plants of different colors, some close-cropped and tidy, others that hang a little more free, and so on.

A natural underwater vista would include a number of rocks and pebbles of the same type. It might be tempting on your visit to an aquarium supplies store to pick a couple of all the best-looking rocks around for a Technicolor effect; while that might be the way to go for Vegas-like glamor, you must remember that you are going for the natural look, for Oriental restraint. Try to pick all your aquarium rocks, as many as you get, to belong to the same geological type, more or less. When you arrange them around the bottom of your tank, the placement that should work best is usually where the action of water currents would kick them around. The natural look is best achieved by rolling the rocks around and letting them rest where their center of gravity dictates.

Of course the aquarium you dream up can never be precisely to your standards; an aquarium is a living environment, and is a place of free biological growth. If you can somehow factor that into your core philosophy, you should be ahead of most first-time designers and perhaps you could say something grand to people who come in to admire your handiwork, like "According to ancient Japanese wisdom, the earth that supports life and the life that lives on it must all be free". - 29957

Planning Gay Holidays To France

By Howie Holben

Whether as a stop on a tour through Europe, or a standalone gay travel destination, France offers travelers world-renowned beaches, snow-covered alps, bucolic countryside dotted with castles and remnants of Frances long history, some of the most amazing art collections in the world, the fabulous French Riviera and, of course, the truly exceptional, unique city of Paris.

People often do their gay vacations around Paris and its vibrant LGBT community, cultural and historical landmarks and accepting cosmopolitan environment, visitors will find that throughout France there is plenty to do and see, as well as many LGBT establishments and a welcoming atmosphere. Laws outlawing sodomy were abolished over 200 years ago and Frances LGBT community has enjoyed civil unions for the last decade. With legal protections in place and a general laissez-faire attitude that is common among the French, visitors will find that France provides an accepting, and pleasant destination for gay tours.

Numerous community events take place across the country throughout the year, including several pride festivals and a very well-attended pride parade and festival and gay and lesbian film festival in Paris. Some unique establishments to check out while in Paris on a gay vacation include the Marais district LGBT-owned bakery, Legay Choc; the ArtMenParis exhibit of all-male images; and Madame Arthur, LArtishow and Chez Michou, three cabarets with female impersonators and drag shows. Paris nightlife is lively, with bars open from afternoon until 2am and clubs opening at midnight, and often staying open until noon.

For men who are interested in experiencing the bawdier side of Parisian life, sex clubs, cruising spots and bars with backrooms are easy to find for visitors on gay vacations. Paris is also home to a plethora of saunas, also known as bathhouses, which are popular attractions for both locals and visitors. Saunas are not open 24-hours in France and do not have private rooms to rent. For privacy, visitors can enjoy relaxation cubicles and out-of-towners should keep in mind that going to a sauna is a primarily afternoon activity in Paris, with Sunday afternoons being the most crowded.

Most gay travel hotspots cater largely to men, have little to no visible lesbian presence and offer few establishments dedicated to the lesbian community. Women will be delighted to discover that this is not the case in Paris. Parisian lesbians and visitors enjoy a multitude of venues and organizations that can be found throughout the city, but particularly in the neighborhoods of Marais, Grands Boulevards, Halles-Beaubourg, Saint Germain des Pres and Palais Royal. Palais Royal is home to one of the oldest lesbian bars in Paris, while the Bastille-Republique district has a delightful community bookstore with a distinct Sapphic flare. There is also a lesbian walking group and even a sex shop that caters solely to women.

Although Paris might be the most visited gay vacation destination in France, many other options are available throughout the country, including Avignon in Provence, Montpellier and Nice on the Mediterranian coast, Annecy in the Alps, Nantes in Brittany and the nude community beaches of Camargue. For those who hope to rub elbows with the rich and famous, Saint Tropez on the French Riviera should not be missed, while those looking for a romantic retreat might opt for an LGBT-owned B ... B outside of Bourdeaux. With so many gay travel options to choose from, France is truly an ideal setting for gay holidays. - 29957

Smart And Time-Saving Tips For Choosing A Kid-Friendly Dog

By Gerald Tommey

If you want to get a dog for the family then this is not something that you should rush. Make sure that you spend a bit of time learning of the best dogs for kids. There are a number of breeds out there that are really great with children and having said that, it is important to note that the opposite is true as well so you need to make sure that you make the right decision.

When looking at the age of the dog for the family, it is necessary to take into consideration the energy levels of the dog. For example, an old married couple shouldn't get a 3 month old Collie puppy as Collies are dogs that need lots of attention and have limitless energy. This 3 month old Collie would be better suited to a family with young children who are able to play with the puppy and help consume some of that energy that Collies are so famous for!

Another important thing to take into consideration is the type or breed of dog that would best suit the family. A firm favourite amongst all animal lovers is the ever popular Labrador retriever and golden retriever. These two breeds of dog are possibly the most popular family dog as they are loyal, protective and patient. Most retrievers are able to cope with kids pulling their ears and tails as this seems to be the done thing!

But this is not the only choice open to one. You might also want to try the German Shepherd breed that is also known as a patient protector. For those that live is a smaller environment or if the children are likely to be scared of a bigger dog then a Maltese poodle is a great idea. They are the ultimate kind of lap dog and just love all the attention. They enjoy it without being demanding which is a tough balance to get. For those that have no issue with size the Great Dane is a natural choice. This is a giant amongst dogs but a gentle giant and one that makes an incredible companion. Then of course there is always a mongrel to melt your heart.

These little guys are just so grateful for a home that they are not going to be fussy. Often these little chaps are at the local pound or animal shelter and rather than buy a dog, it is recommended that you seriously think about one of these as they would essentially be saving a life. Many shelters have no choice but to put dogs down if they are not claimed. These dogs might not always be the best looking but they often turn out to be one's true best friend.

No matter what kind of breed you eventually decide on, you have to make sure that the dog goes through some form of training. This will ensure that they understand how to be obedient and it will also make it safer for your children. Training should be done with a positive attitude in mind and not one that centres around punishment.

So when you look for the best dogs for kids it is a good idea to know that almost any dog can be a good family pet. You need to let the animal know that it is loved and it will show you all the unconditional love you have ever wanted and soon you will wonder why you didn't get one earlier. - 29957

Why You Should Power Your Hydroponic Room For Free With Magnetic Energy

By Elle Radique

It does not matter what size your hydroponic room is or the quantity of plants you wish to keep there as you can now run all the electric items you need for free. You do not need to worry about the high levels you have to pay when your energy bills come through, neither do you have to give up your hobby or business. I will tell you all about how to power your hydroponic room for free with magnetic energy.

The first thing that will appeal to those who are reading this is the fact that they are able to save a lot of money meaning that no matter your reasons for needing equipment in your grow room you will no longer have to pay for the running. There is no need for maintenance as there is with other kinds of renewable energy as it continues to run without any intervention.

With other forms of energy you will have to attach them to some sort of energy supply in order for them to function properly. You can get all the benefits without such attachment making this method even cheaper than the windmills providing wind power and the solar panels giving you power from the sun.

No matter the climate of the country you live in or the room temperature you are able to use magnetic energy without concern. You do not have to worry about your plants in your hydroponic room dying due to any sort of power failure and this will mean that you can remain confident even when you are not at home if you have automatic feeders and other timer set controls.

The reason why this has been kept from people like you and I for so long is because those who provide other kinds of energy at extortionate prices did not want this secret out. This is because they will no longer be able to benefit from us in the way they have done for many years.

You will still be able to benefit from saving space when you use this kind of energy, which is of course one of the reasons why you may have chosen to grow plants in this way in the first place. The equipment you need to create the magnetic energy is also space saving therefore you can still utilize the available space in your hydroponic room.

You are able to not only be able to benefit from this free ongoing energy supply, you can also benefit the environment as this source will not produce any kinds of harmful pollutants that will cause harm for both us living today and future generations. You will also be able to gloat in the fact that you are not lining the pockets of companies that are using alternative energy and saving money yet are not passing their savings on to you as the customer.

You will be able to use this kind of energy for as long as you wish and this will allow you to get benefits that have been kept from us for so long. Why not benefit in the way that other people are doing and be able to run your whole hydroponic room no matter the size or quantity of plants you have inside. There is no reason why anyone would not want to get on board and join in enjoying the benefits that free energy can provide you with. - 29957

The Advantages of Underfloor Heating for Your Home

By Jeremy Szechenyi

Underfloor heating is simply heat radiation applied as a heating method. Since heat will transfer from warm to cool places, it can be used for heat. A wood stove is a common radiant heating source, capable of produce large amounts of heat. This concept can be leveraged in a home by radiant underfloor heating.

If you are interested in radiant floor heating, then the first thing you have to do is decide what variation you are interested in. Underfloor heating exists in 2 variations.

The First Type: Electric radiant heating.

Type 2: Water underfloor heating

With the electric underfloor heating variation, electrical coils are used. They are warmed by a low current, and come in size customizable mats or rolls.

Water underfloor heating utilizes hot water filled pipes to produce radiant heat. The hot water comes form a how water tank, pumped through pipes laid under the floor. This process repeats until desired room temperature is reached.

The radiant transfer of heat by underfloor heating results in lower heat loss levels. The floor and items on the floor absorb heat, and slowly release it over time. This keeps a room at a steady temperature level, without the normal fluctuations that occur with the heating cycles of forced hot air or baseboard heaters.

Due to the nature of heating the area close to the floor, underfloor heating is very efficient. There is less heat loss to the rising of hot air, as with other heat variations.

You could also apply geothermal and solar to your system to help reduce heating bills. This would allow you to reduce your carbon footprint.

If you are going to remodel your house or want to install new, efficient heating, consider underfloor heating as a good choice. - 29957

Get The Windows Working Properly With Sash Cord Repairs

By Zara Colwell

With wooden double hung windows, if the window weights are not working properly, the windows can be difficult to open or close. Most of the time a few sash cord repairs are all that are needed to get the windows working correctly again.

Sash weights are iron weights that connect to the window through use of a cord. The cord fits over a pulley found in the upper portion of the window frame. The weight itself is not visible as it is located inside your wall.

Over time, the cord that holds the weights may fray and eventually break. Without the weights to counterbalance the weight of the window, it can be difficult to open or close the window. In addition, the window will not remain open on its own with the sash cords broken.

Most homeowners find that sash cord repairs are easy enough to do. Windows have an access opening in the frames that allow you to make the repairs without removing the entire window assemble from the wall. You will need to remove the lower window from the assembly to access the weight opening.

There are some small trim boards that keep the lower window in place. Once you remove these boards, you should have easy access to the weight access holes. Begin by cutting any cords that remain in place. You will need to replace both cords at the once and this makes removing the window easier. Using a utility knife cut through any paint that may be holding the trim in place. Then use a putty knife to gently lift the trim and its nails from the window frame. If there is a metal track, it will have to also be removed at this time. This should allow the lower window to be lifted out of its place to access the window weight port for replacing the sash cords.

Once the new cords have been attached to the window and weights, you are ready to put the window back together again. Reverse the steps for removing the lower portion of the window and you should have a window that is in great working order. - 29957

It isn't too early or too late to start your fitness routine. Mavens advised that kids as young as 6 should pack in one hour of vigorous activity a day! Sounds strange, but it is advised by the best America can offer and we all know the benefits of exercising as we grow older, that does not need an introduction.

A lot of middle aged men are too wrapped up in their professional and family lives to find time to exercise. What they don't realize is that staying active and healthy throughout lengthens your life and allows you to live longer so that you can enjoy all those things you've worked so difficult for. The most vital thing to do when you reach your 40s is de stressing.

So if you ask me what the best strategy of keeping fit after you reach a mature age is, I'd endorse yoga and meditation because this not only allows you to have a fitter body, it also gives you inner strength, peace of mind and most importantly, lowers your stress levels.

you may also go for anxiety management classes. But do whatever is needed to de-stress. This is one area of men's fitness which men have a tendency to ignore. Remember men's fitness isn't just about pumping iron in the gymnasium. Being mentally fit is vital too.

That is not to say that you can skip the gym or the jog! No sirs, if you are not doing yoga frequently, then you know how important it is to go to the gymnasium and get your regular dose of cardio, together with your stress control classes.

Don't underestimate the importance of male fitness in your lives, it is very important to stay fit and feel good about yourself as you age. - 29957

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Slow Cooker History

By Ken Kudra

Crock-pots... almost everyone has one, but do they use them? Many just stay in the cupboard, completely underused. Slow cooking has been used for hundreds of years to get the most out of food, but it used to be a lot more work than it is today.

In the Olden Days

Slow cooking has been around ever since people figured out how to make an iron pot. One could be hung over a fire for many hours while food simmered in it, or a smaller one could be filled with ingredients and buried in the coals to cook. People have long known the benefits of slow cooking their food. The obvious detriment to these methods was the attention it took tending the fire all day and stirring the contents of the pots.

Slow cooking tenderizes even tough cuts of meat through the gradual softening of the fibers in the meat. The low heat gradually melts the natural collagen within; making a delicious, thick, and gelatin-rich meal that is full of nutrition. Long cooking times over low heat slowly breaks down the fibers in tough root crops like rutabagas, parsnips, and turnips. It also tenderizes stored crops like dried beans and lentils until they are not only tender, but also delicious.

Today's Crock Pot

The Beanery was introduced in the'50s by the Naxon Utilities Corporation of Chicago. It was designed to make baked beans. The Beanery was a ceramic pot fitted inside a pan lined with heating elements inside. This design allowed for even heating without direct contact with the food, making it easier not to burn the contents.

Rival purchased Naxon in'70. The Beanery was renamed the Crock Pot and marketed to the many women who were leaving the home to go to work every day. Crock Pots helped many women feed their families every night. It made their lives easier knowing that a hot meal was waiting when they got home.

As the years have passed, the Crock Pot has been improved. With features like removable ceramic inserts for easy cleaning and more settings, it has become more useful than ever before. Unlike older models that only had High and Low settings and were in one piece, making cleaning difficult; the newer models often feature a Warm setting as well as being easier to take care of.

While women made many dishes slow cooking the old way, today's crock-pot is even more versatile. Beans, stews, casseroles, and roasts are the most common dishes made in the crock-pot. You can also make foods like lasagna, barbecued pork, and even your favorite chicken noodle soup recipe in your crock-pot.

Like the traditional methods, crock-pots can also be used to bake breads and cakes. The more you play with your crock-pot, the more you may enjoy it. Desserts and other great recipes are waiting to be tried. - 29957

HGH pills and Sprays

By Tom William

Discovery of an oral spray HGH is actually performed by Serendipity. The group of scientists and doctors on Anti Aging Research Lab discovered that they can get HGH molecule that absorbs in the same way the scientists are trying to get the insulin molecule, which is half the size of the HGH molecule. Used a process called cross-linked. HGH is by its nature, is twice the size of the molecules of insulin, growth hormone is restrictive in its cross-linked. This can be stretched without damage, so-called molecular assembly, as well as putting the ball in the hole Nerf node.

Many researchers have also claimed more than 10 years, high dose injections of growth hormone, in the end will help to accelerate the aging process, if you close the injections.

And injection of one international unit is equivalent to 350,000 nanograms. 50,000 nanograms is the approximate amount produced by the body in 24-hour period. This means that the injection is 7 times the quantity normally produced in the body. High blood pressure can occur due to edema (water retention), which may cause too much HGH. If the dose is brought back to normal blood pressure.

Scientists don't do not know what long-term effects of chronic overdose of HGH have been. It is possible that continuous HGH overdose can cause health problems, and this is especially problematic for people who regularly inject HGH. There are some documents that show that high levels of HGH can cause heart problems, because many high-level professional athletes who are abusing HGH showed complications and even death due to cardiovascular levels of pollution.

In fact, the doses are extremely important for long term success of HGH. Not enough can not be given the necessary result and too much can cause health problems. Therefore, the addition of an oral HGH is probably the best choice for someone who is concerned about their long-term health.

Direct injections of HGH has also been shown to be unnecessary, because the body can absorb HGH in an oral form, and lower doses of HGH can have some impressive health benefits without the long-term risk for health complications. - 29957

Suspended paper lanterns

By Cody Scholberg

The process for Hanging Paper Lanterns is now used to decorate places where happy events are staged. Other than employed at celebrations, they are used as permanent items in buildings and gardens. Illuminative paper lanterns come as preassembled or knock down types.

People now have the option to buy decorative lanterns that need assembly at home or ones that are pre-assembled. Assembling decorative paper lanterns is easy. Twenty minutes is all you need to assemble a hanging paper lantern.

When you buy hanging paper lanterns, you can see that they are equipped with a metal tool for expanding the paper globe as well. The cord required to hang the lantern must be purchased separately. Since the cords normally come in 10 to 15-foot lengths, you may have to add an extension in the event you need more length.

You need the install the cord after the expansion. Place the cord along the wall and hook it to the ceiling. Use a suitable tape to affix the cord to the ceiling. However, hooks are better than tape to secure the cord. Install the bulb after that.

After you reshape the lantern, you will need the cord to hang it. Place the cord along the wall to the top and hook the cord to the ceiling. Select a tape that will stick the cord well. The cord can be fixed with hooks which are stronger than any tape. Install the light next. As electric fixtures may cause fires, keep enough space between each side of the lanterns when positioning the bulb. It is more suitable to use CFL bulbs rather than other types because these bulbs heat up less.

CFL bulbs are much better than incandescent lights for paper lanterns as the former heats less. Always keep the wattage low as it minimizes the probability of fires. After attaching, switch on the light to see if it works properly. Occasionally, it may not work due to erroneous installation. Check the installation for proper usage. - 29957

Long Term Care Insurance Premiums: What I Can Deduct.

By Terry Stanfield

When tax season comes, all anyone seems to talk about is deductions. Not surprisingly, one of the most common questions about long-term care insurance premiums is "Can I deduct them?"

Well, the truth is that you can, in some cases, so find out where you sit in terms of deduction scenarios to find out what you can deduct from your long-term care insurance premiums.

First of all, if you are an individual taxpayer that does not itemize, then you are unable to claim a deduction on your long-term care insurance premiums. However, if you do itemize deductions then you can deduct the health insurance premium but it is limited to the lesser of the actual premium, or eligible long-term care premium.

If you are a self-employed tax payer, including partnerships, members of LLC, or sole proprietors, then you are eligible for a self-employed health insurance deduction on your IRS Form but it is limited to the lesser of actual premium paid but it is not subject to the 7.5 percent of Adjusted Gross Income threshold.

If your premiums are paid for by an employer, the employer will treat the long-term care insurance premiums as accident and health plans. These premiums would then be deductible to the employer and would not be including in the income of the employee.

It can get a bit complicated to understand what you can deduct and what you cannot deduct when tax season comes around. As a result, it is important that you contact your tax adviser or accountant to find out exactly what you can and cannot do. You do not want to try and deduct something you cannot and then face an audit, and at the same time you do not want to neglect to deduct what you can, forcing you to pay more or receive less on your income tax rebate.

If you do your own taxes, then consult your insurance company to find out what you are able to deduct on the long-term care insurance premiums that you pay to them. The representatives should be more than helpful in answering your questions and ensuring you do not end up audited, or not deducting what you can.

Summary Tax season is a stressful time for citizens and accountants alike. It is a time of trying to figure out what to deduct, what to exclude and how to get as much bang for their buck as possible. As a result, people will try and deduct everything that they can, including long-term care insurance premiums.

Many do not realize, however, what they can deduct in terms of their long-term care insurance premiums, but if they take the time to research the tax information and figure out where they sit in terms of the type of taxpayer they are, they should be able to figure it out. In the worst case scenario, an individual should just ask for help from an accountant or insurance representative who will be happy to answer any questions. - 29957

Finding Memory Foam Mattress Toppers in King Sizes

By Martin Larrent

Who should add a memory foam mattress topper to their existing mattress? Anyone who has trouble sleeping on their current mattress for whatever reason will be able to sleep better with a topper. If you experience any sort of discomfort because of the bumps or curves in your current mattress, a memory foam mattress topper may be a solution to the problem. It is also worth mentioning that you can find toppers in king sizes as well.

Your body heat affects a memory foam surface. While initially solid, as it comes in contact with body heat the material softens. Memory foam conforms to your body and actually creates a mold giving complete support. Memory foam has the ability to spread the pressure of your body weight over the whole area of the foam reducing nagging pressure points. Memory foam cells have small holes designed so that when it is compressed; the air pressure spreads throughout the cells, hence reducing the pressure when laid upon. This is how the material conforms to your body. In this way, the memory foam can spread your weight around the body of the mattress and give in to the weight bearing areas and extra support to the non-weight bearing area of your body.

A king size mattress, like most mattresses, is expensive. The king size mattress is often much more expensive than other sizes. Buying a memory foam mattress pad topper king size for your king size bed will help to extend the life of your mattress. Alternatively, if you do not want to have to replace your old and worn king sized mattress, a memory foam mattress pad topper king can make your old mattress seem like new, which well help you sleep better on it.

You must consider a topper's density, how it responds to body heat, and its durability before you decide to purchase one. Most memory foam has a density between 2 to 6 pounds. The density is the weight of a cubic foot of material. A topper with a higher foam density will have more foam than air on the inside, which determines the higher quality, durability, longer life and price of the pad.

The average life of a low-density pad is 3 to 4 years. Low-density pads are less expensive due to more air and less material. These are softer to the touch and have a higher temperature sensitivity, which means they will react to body heat quicker and meld faster, but the life span is shorter. A high-quality topper can last you up to 5 or 6 years and is the best choice when considering a memory foam mattress topper.

Personal preference, budget and the desire for a better night's sleep will help you determine which topper is right for you. A memory foam mattress pad topper king won't fix a mattress that feels like a sack of potatoes but it will make it a little easier to sleep well. - 29957

At 35 I Dominate in Football Over 20 Somethings

By Landon Corton

If you said to me that I would be where I am today I wouldn't believe you. When you are young you are supposed to be in your prime. From'-23 I was in very good condition, at the top of my game athletically speaking and never had much of an issue with the ladies or controlling the field or the court.

In order to get the most out of the players during the games a strict practice schedule is put into place. Players are asked to compete during practice to get better athletically at their chosen sport and then at the end there is a "conditioning period" set up to get the players in to better condition. It all boils down to on-field performance as every coach wants the players to play their best on the field during games.

Prior to ever making it to the field we were asked to participate in pre-season training. This was typically weight lifting and plyometric workout (jump training) coupled with regular sport drills. All of this was designed to get into shape and to hone your athletic skills. All of this activity put me in very good shape and I was ready to play my chosen sports.

Fast forward 15 years or so and you would think I lost my edge for one reason or another. Well I am here to tell you that you can have that edge and maybe be even better at a given sport than your younger competitor. You have the knowledge of the game and if you are lucky you have the fitness knowledge that most younger people lack. You can run circles around some of those guys simply because you train smarter than they do.

The first smart workout I learned dealt with intensity in my workouts. The level of intensity you bring to your workout will determine the results you get, especially the older you get. Intensity is an interesting thing because you can struggle to get results without it. Far too often people go to the gym to look pretty and just to say they went. They don't actually care about the results as much as they think they do, they care about their actions.

Eating whatever I wanted used to be my solution to eating right! I learned the hard way that eating is how you get the energy you need to get into shape. No one told me that carbs are bad and protein is good. Making the right choices with your food was my second secret to a great workout.

Take these smart workout tips and head into the gym with confidence. Know you can be on the same level as any younger athlete if you work smarter not harder, just steer clear of the injuries and you will thank me. - 29957

The World of (1) Porcelain (2) Earthenware (3) Porcelain

By Diana Richards

Let's take a tour around the typical kitchen. You will see various bowls, plates, mugs, and cups, but have you ever stopped to consider what they are made out of? Your typical dinner set is made out of three main materials, namely earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Most of us have heard of these materials before, but don't know what the differences are. This article will help to shed some light on this issue...

Earthenware
----------------
Earthenware is what is known as a "low-fired" clay. This means that it is fired at a low temperature (usually around'15 degrees Fahrenheit). Made from a white and porous clay, it is sometimes called "ceramics" or "ceramic ware".

Stoneware
--------------
Stoneware (unlike Earthenware) is a "high-fired" clay. It is fired around 2185 degrees Fahrenheit, and as a result of this intense heat, it is much stronger than Earthenware. This firing makes it vitreous (i.e.: like glass), and is chip-resistant and sturdy.

Porcelain
------------
A number of different ingredients are used to make porcelain. The main material is a pale clay, like china white. Other materials that are incorporated are: glass, feldspar, and granite...which are ground, and then added to the clay. Water is added to make the mixture easy to work with. Worked into the desired shape, the mixture is then fired in a bisque kiln (at a moderate temperature). After glazing and then a "high-temperature" firing, the result is a piece of pottery that is both translucent and delicate.

Telling the Difference
--------------------------
Now that we know a bit about each, how do we tell them apart? Here's the process:

1) Is it porcelain? The first thing to keep in mind is that porcelain is translucent, while stoneware and earthenware are not. Hold the item up to the light. Can you see the light shining through? If so, then it is porcelain.

2) If it's not porcelain, we know that it must be either stoneware or earthenware. What do we do next? We need to check out the weight of the item. If it's rather heavy for its size, then it's stoneware.

3) Stoneware also has a "look" of hand-made pottery. This means that stoneware will have a texture to it. Earthenware will not.

4) Does the item you are holding have a chip in it? If so, take a look at it. Is it very white and "chalky" looking? Can you scrape off more material with your fingernail? If so, it's probably earthenware. We say this because earthenware, when fired, has a white, chalky look. Stoneware, on the other hand, has a darker, textured look.

5) If any part of the piece is unglazed, take a look to see if textured clay is showing through. This means that it is stoneware.

This completes our journey into the world of porcelain, earthenware, and stoneware...the main ingredients of today's popular dinner sets. If a particular dinner set fancies you, then we have a lot more information on our web site. - 29957

The Knee - Part Two

By Jonathan Blood Smyth

The inward rotation of the femur which occurs as the knee comes close to its locking position of extension is not large but very important to knee function, making the knee much more complex than a simple hinge joint. The small internal movements of the knee are limited in the knee joint and the joint cannot afford any losses of these motions without losing some of its function. These small movements are called accessory movements and are small gliding and sliding movements which occur within the joint during functional activity but which cannot be performed in isolation.

The knee's function is to complete two contradictory demands, the ability to move the body quickly into a newly desired position and the ability to keep the body stable and controlled in a chosen position. In the walking cycle the knee has to be a mobile limb for moving into the next position at one moment then at the next function as a reliably stable support. In the gait cycle the knees go through a repeated process of unlocking to move and locking to bear weight, permitting a human to walk significant distances with safety and effectiveness. Loss of the accessory movements may be involved in early knee problems.

The knee has very strong muscles but can also respond to changes such as an uneven surface by finer controlled reactions. The knee is strong enough to achieve full squatting and then stand our body weight up again without pause. The knee's accessory movements are small in distance with side to side more limited than front to back, both however contributing to coping with uneven ground. The inside of the knee joint can gap open more than the outside due to the natural angle of the lower leg to the knee.

As reviewed in the article which precedes this one, the knee functions typically only in one plane, that of forwards and backwards. If a sideways stress is introduced so movement occurs in another plane also, as with knock-knee or bow leg, the patello-femoral joint and the knee compartments can suffers degenerative consequences. The compartments of the knee are the division into the outside half and the inside half of the joint, with each consisting of a tibial and femoral condyle, a meniscus and the ligament. The amount of sideways angulation alters the way that stresses pass across the knee compartments.

If the knee becomes bow-legged to some degree the quadriceps pulling on the patella levers it towards the inside and can cause the patella to be compressed against the inside of the femoral groove, with painful results. The lateral knee compartment then suffers increased forces and is subject to accelerated wear changes on that side. Typically people have a small degree of knock knee, and any exaggeration of this can make kneecap pain more likely on the outside and cause increased wear of the inside compartment.

If the knee is not capable of full extension then the kneecap can develop problems due to the persistent flexion which makes the quadriceps overactive to hold the knee in place, increasing patellar compression. This increased compression can cause a very common condition known as anterior knee pain or patellofemoral pain. To correct the lateral misalignment a small wedge can be placed under the outer edge of the heel to correct alignment of the shin and so influence the stresses which are passing through the knee joint above.

Difficulties with other joints can cause changes in the patella stresses also. The arches of the foot suffer from time and body weight and so reduce as they get weaker, moving towards a flatter foot. On weight bearing the foot turns inward as it flattens, bringing the ankle and the shin towards the centre with it, exaggerating any knock knee amount. Patello-femoral pain can then occur as the kneecap is pressed more forcefully towards the lateral side of the knee. Prescribing individual orthotics for the shoes can be an effective management, both providing an amount of medial heel wedging plus correcting the collapse of the foot arches. - 29957

When You Head Out To Buy Microwave Ovens

By Miles Stoppard

Dr. Percy Spencer was doing a bit of research on radar and related items. It was the year'46, and he would discover something very amazing. It would lead to the development of microwave ovens. While he was doing his testing he noticed that the candy bar had melted he had in his pocket. To test out to make sure he hadn't imagined it, he placed some popcorn kernels next to the tube, and watched them pop.

So by the next morning he decided to try the egg placing it close to the tube. The egg began to shake and tremor as the colleague moved to look a bit closer at the egg, it exploded! That's how the idea first came about for the microwave.

To see how much more energy could be created Dr. Spencer decided to build a metal box to place around the tube. He saw just how much more it would increase the energy that was created. The steps that he had moved through would lead to the development of an industry that would produce well over a billion deal through the years.

It was shortly after that the first commercial microwave would be produced. It would be an amazing 750 pounds and stand at five and a half feet tall. The cost of this item would be $5, 000. It was something that many people even larger businesses weren't too thrilled about spending money on. Plus the fact that you would need a plumbing hook up to help keep that internal tube cooled didn't help out much.

Then came the first radarange, this was made for homes, unlike the first commercial use microwave that had been produced. At least the price was a bit less expensive only around $2, 000 to $3, 000 each. While the prices would go down through the years until now you can buy a microwave for sometimes $100 and get a nice buy.

When you need to buy a microwave now you are maybe going to spend $200. But in many cases you will pay a lot less money. If every home in the United States doesn't have one of these items, it's amazing. It's the perfect way to make a quick meal and be out the door again for many people.

Comparing those prices is a must when you are planning on buying a new microwave. Of course you can look at used ones too, as long as you get to test them out to make sure they are working. Though you may want to ask about a warranty of some type even on those used models that you consider. Just in case you take it home and a week later it stops working, you would have lost whatever amount of money you paid. - 29957

A Great Weight Lifting Workout Anybody Can Use

By Emmanuel Palmer

Everyone wants to look great, who doesn't? You get more admiring glances and you even get special favors once in a while; but more than anything you feel better about yourself. If you weren't born with a wrestler's body, thank God that would be too scary. However, if you are naturally skinny or hefty, you still can a great physique if you have enough determination, motivation and maybe get a little bit of kick out of physical pain-the good kind only.

Let us start with the basics: how to build bigger muscle. Exercise, those involving heavy weights particularly, puts tears in the muscle tissues. When you go home and rest, these little tears are then repaired by your body. As they are repaired, hormones are released to develop the same muscles to withstand the more stress thus creating the bigger and stronger muscles that you see. To get that body you want, below is a solid weight lifting workout that you can use right away.

Before you train, always do a minimum of 10 to 30 minute aerobic exercise to get your blood flowing to your heart, lungs and muscle tissues. Warm up and stretching, increases your body's temperature, preparing your body for the physical stress it is about to endure in the next hour or so. Stretching between sets is helpful, especially in easing muscle soreness in the next few days.

There are quite a few exercise equipment and drills available for your training. What is crucial is that you study and plan the factors that make up an effective workout program to fully maximize the muscle groups worked on that day. Some of these factors would be the frequency of training, reps and sets performed, and weight loads to be used.

Beginners should do around 2 to 3 sets of 12 reps of lower weight loads. The weight should be heavy enough that the target muscle will be unable to lift the weight after the 12th repetition. Experiment on what this would be for you. If your goal is to build bigger muscle, take only 60 to 90 seconds of rest in between sets.

Experienced trainers will suggest a two to four day training to maximize your work out sessions-allowing you to focus and work hard on specific muscle groups on certain days. Try dividing between your upper (back, chest, arms, shoulders) and lower (legs, stomach) body if that works for you. You can also train muscle groups that work together on the same days. Remember to exercise according to the size; start with the larger muscles first before proceeding with the smaller ones.

Listed below are some exercises to help you get started: Legs- squats, front squats, lunges and leg press Chest- barbell bench press, dumbbell bench press (flat, decline or incline) Back- T-bar rows, lat pull downs and deadlifts Shoulders- dumbbell rear felt flyes and military press (sitting and standing) Arms- dips, barbell curls and close-grip bench press Stomach- crunches and leg raises

Always take plenty of fluids, around 10 to 12 glasses of water, to fuel your body during workout sessions. Do not forget to cool down by stretching thoroughly after exercise and consult with your therapist immediately for any unusual pain you feel in your joints and muscles. Now you have an excellent weight lifting workout-- go forth and multiply your muscles. - 29957

Bodybuilding Workouts for the Body You Want

By Quentin Sanderson

If you are one of those people whose metabolism is really fast, you must have been embarrassed by it on various counts. Looking physically fragile is not the best thing for people who are looking to make a career in sports for example. But the good news is that with proper diet charts and food intake you can put on mass, and fast. There are also some body workouts and weight lifting techniques that you can incorporate into your daily routine, to gain well-built muscles.

You are what is known as a 'hard gainer', and all you need is the right guidance in gaining the weight you wanted for so long. Yes, that is right, for all hardgainers, what is needed is a totally specialized regime for workouts and following the correct weight lifting techniques. Normal body building exercises will not do you any good in fact any even cause the reverse of what you want. So a thorough knowledge of which muscles you need to work on and utilize is extremely important in your weight gain process. What is ideal for you is a balanced combination of doing weights, cardio and eating the right food, as unlike people who are working out just to build muscles, you need to first get your weight to an ideal mark.

If you manage to find the right routine for yourself and manage to stick to it for a week, you will see the difference it can make. These programs are not for bodybuilders. If you follow the program religiously you can gain up to 30 pounds in seven days. When combined with other programs, it can give you the body that you have always dreamed about.

Another thing that you need to give adequate attention to is your diet. Its not about the number of calories that you are consuming but the kind of food you are eating. If you enroll in a hardgainer program you will be given a summary of the kind of food you should be eating. This would help you stay away from the food, which will hamper your plans to gain muscle mass in the long run. You have to take the right supplements and at the right time.

Proteins play a key role in the hardgainer weight lifting technique. This means you need to include eggs, meat, and fish into your daily diet. Milk is the most efficient provider of calcium to the body on a regular basis. Therefore, hold on to that glass of whiteness for as long as you can. Drink a lot of energy drinks. Protein shakes are also available as supplements. Fresh fruits and green vegetables are very good sources of fiber.

If you are taking nutritional supplements, make sure they suit your body type externally as well as internally. Do not follow the bodybuilding plans that are printed in magazines. Bodybuilders look into retaining their already formed muscle mass. For someone who has a lean body, he needs to build the mass first. Workout regime must include the correct proportion of cardio and weight training. The latter is solely responsible for building and toning muscles. Cardio helps in blood circulations and burns extra calories off the body very effectively. Therefore, with slight planning you can also achieve washboard abs and toned arms and legs. - 29957

A fireplace plug is a plastic inflatable pillow that is very effective at sealing the fireplace chimney. If the plug is in position, there's no more draft and almost no heat loss by way of the chimney. While the plug might look like an inflatable swim toy, the material it's made of is specially chosen to be resistant to the acids in wood soot and creosote so that the plug is long lasting.

You must only use the plug in a cool fireplace. The opening to the chimney must be free of sharp metal or masonry that could tear the plug. Get rid of the soot and creosote making use of a brush or scraper. Inflate the plug and lift it into the chimney opening. Adjust the handle to keep the plug in position.

Welcome to thirty percent savings on your heating and cooling bills.

In order to use the fireplace, all that you need to do is take out the plug and pull the handle to open the damper. Once the fire dies down, let the fireplace get cool and secure the damper. Re-insert the fireplace plug in the opening. The fireplace doors or screen hides the handle so that nobody knows that it is there.

You'll save enough cash off your first month's energy bill to pay for the cost of the fireplace plug. Your home will no longer be as drafty, as the fireplace is no longer going to create a vacuum that will pull cold air into your home via every crack it can find. Additionally, you have blocked the back drafts that come in via the chimney, bringing gusts of warm air in the summer and cold air in the winter. Your house will no longer be cold and drafty.

With the fireplace vacuum sealed, you will no longer get the downdrafts and bursts of hot or cold air that are brought into your house by way of the chimney. There is no need for them to come back into the house to fill the vacuum and the opening that they used to come through has been plugged. If the children ask, Santa's magic can still get around the plug. - 29957

Shedding Some Light On Halogen Desk Lamps

By Duncan Munday

There's been a lot of publicity, some would say hype, surrounding halogen lamps over the past twelve months or so, especially since phasing out the traditional light bulb began. But, is halogen lighting all it's cracked up to be? The truth is, it does have it's place in domestic lighting, and although not ideal for every application, for desk lamps halogen is superb.

Once you understand the basic physics behind halogen lighting, it is easier to appreciate where it can be used to the greatest advantage. Just as with the traditional light bulb, halogen lamps work on the principle of incandescence; simply, a wire filament is made to glow by passing and electric current through it. If the traditional light bulb were not surrounded by glass, the filament would just burn out.

I halogen lamps, the filament is sealed into a transparent gas-filled pocket, together with an inert gas plus a small amount of halogen. The advantage of this is that the filament continues to work for longer and at higher temperatures. Because of this higher running temperature halogen lamps should be used with caution when setting them into enclosed spaces, such as ceiling and walls.

The tungsten filament in halogen lamps glows with a bright white light; there is none of the cosiness that comes with traditional light bulbs. Some folk find this off putting, however this clear light is superbly suited to paperwork and reading, which means that halogen desk lamps have a clear advantage over traditional lighting.

And this, of course, is the crux of the matter - the characteristics of light produced by halogen lamps are very different from the light we have grown used to. It is not cosy, it is not soft focus, it is not good general illumination; it is clean, it is white, it is directable - it is ideal task lighting.

The reason for the increasing popularity of halogen reading lights and desk lamps is that halogen light shows colours bright and true to help reduce eye strain.

There is a disadvantage to all of this bright light though - halogen bulbs simply have to be shaded. Once shaded, however, you can direct clear white light exactly where you want it; on a desk, this will be onto the papers or spreadsheets you're working on.

There is another reason for the popularity of halogen lamps, though, and that is the longevity of the filament. Halogen bulbs will last up to 3,000 hours or, to put it another way you could leave the desk lamp on 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the bulb would last an age. That's not all - that self same bulb will also use up to 20% less energy than a standard one.

So there you have it - the truth about halogen lighting. These lamps may not be the definitive answer to all your lighting needs but when it comes to desk lamps they truly are the light of choice. - 29957

Medicine Cabinets-Get The Most in Function and Style

By Myra Neuford

Consider how necessary your medicine cabinet is to your daily grooming routine.

If you have never given this much thought just resolve for one day not to open your medicine cabinet, and cover the mirror. Before the day is done I am sure you will recognize just how much value your medicine cabinet provides.

When you decide it is time to replace and shop for a new medicine cabinet it is good to review your needs and what is available.

Space will be a major consideration. Not only should you consider the space available above your vanity, but consider what type of lighting you will install, and faucet height. This can factor into both the size and the placement of your new medicine cabinet.

Deciding whether you will select a wall mounted medicine cabinet or one that is recessed is also an important choice. A recessed model will protrude less and is more sleek and attractive, but will require more thought and work to install. Be sure you know where your wiring is if you are installing a recessed medicine cabinet and take safety precautions.

Hanging a new wall mounted medicine cabinet is very easy, unless you are hanging it where a larger recessed version was taken out. Here again, some repair to the wall is necessary first. Also realize that a wall mounted cabinet will protrude more.

There are many styles to choose from and you will want your new medicine cabinet to coordinate with the other decor elements of your bathroom. Early American, Contemporary, Mission, Art Deco, and Country are a few possible style choices.

Whether you select a framed or a frameless mirror is a personal choice. Wood tones are timeless and always popular. Oak, walnut and cherry are a few options. Painted frames are also available, black and white being the two most often chosen.

Frameless medicine cabinets are a very popular choice. They give a bathroom a sleek look and extend the mirrored area.

Also consider whether you want sliding doors on your medicine cabinet, or doors that swing open. It goes without saying, that the inside shelves should be adjustable.

Some medicine cabinets are offered with extra depth to store items as large as blow dryers out of sight. Other models offer built in electrical plugins which can be handy. Lighting embedded in the mirror itself, fogless mirrors, and some high end models even offer temperature controlled storage for medicines and cosmetics to extend shelf life.

Good hinges should be an important feature in your mirrored medicine cabinet. Mirrors are heavy and piano or scissor hinges are needed to manage the load.

If your bathroom is small, and you have a corner sink, there are also medicine cabinets in corner versions to meet this need. - 29957
